5. It was my first nut

There's something about a three-year-old reaching into the pockets of his jeans.

Charlie has been carrying a gumnut around for the last few days. Last night, he reached both hands into his pockets, and they came out empty, his face surprised.
‘Is it gone?’ I said.
He nodded.
Then he looked thoughtful. ‘It was my first nut,’ he said. ‘And I loved it.’

I searched the house for it, and found it in the couch cushions. He seemed mildly pleased to see it again, but handed it back to me almost at once, and went on playing with the racing cars.

So glad no venomous spiders jumped out of the gumnut while Charlie was playing with it!
It looks like a friendly gumnut but you know, you never really know!!! Everything in the world these days is soo deceiving.

Btw, I just ran on the treadmill, and my head still feels a little strange!

On a more relevant note, I'm really glad you're posting everyday because it's such a joy to read your blog! :D

PS. I deleted my first comment, even though it was the same as this one except for one word which was a grammatical error. Even in my post-treadmill state I couldn't stand it! :P Hehehe...

You blog like your books. This is unusual but strangely comforting. Consistency in the world. e=mc squared, Jaclyn Moriarty writes thus. True everywhere.

I very much enjoy your books, by the way.

Thank you so much, Jen, and the new book comes out in the states next month. And TopCat, yes, thanks for noticing - he is much better. Only two more days of medicine to go - I gave it to him in ice-cream last night. And I also wish I would come to London. Elleira, I think that only gumnut babies live in gumnuts, but you have to watch out for the Banksia men. And I check my boots for spiders every day. And Flora, I was just reading about Einstein, just that moment, and now look at that, you're quoting him. Jx
